Research Areas

The following mutually-related research areas are set for basic polymer researches to synthesize and understand giant molecules (macromolecules) = polymers.

(1)   Basic science for making polymers with precisely controlled structures

(2)   Basic science for understanding the constitution of polymers

(3)   Basic science associated with organisms and life

Namely, noticing afresh that polymers are assemblies of giant molecules, we systematically elucidate the structure and properties of polymer molecules having diverse chemical structures, and furthermore those of condensed and complex polymer systems consisting of molecules with rich information installed in their chemical structures. This can make it possible to utilize polymer materials to the limit and to efficiently develop innovative intelligent materials. Also, a basic and scientific understanding of polymer molecules constituting organisms surely contributes to life science as a strong scientific support from chemistry. Furthermore, ICMS intends to pioneer a new scientific field by combining biology, chemistry and physics.
